cosby show idea dailies

Uncategorized — jacob @ 1:29 pm

yesterday during taping mike benedetti was shooting alongside me with his little digicam, and this morning he put together this little montage of some of the day’s events. realize that the background has not been added in yet, the laff track hasn’t been added and the editing is off, and most importantly, these shots are not from our main camera, and as such are all from the wrong angle. but this should give you some idea of what we’re doing anyway:

thanks mike!

grift certificates

by special request, we now have gift certificates. they are available in the following denominations: $5, $10, $20, and $23. a great gift idea, because winter holidays are all about subtly forcing your belief systems on other people in seemingly innocuous ways. the gift certificates come with all sorts of cool fake security stuff, like discrete paint splatters, watermarks, holograms, mirages, and semantic encoding. they look really good enough to frame, and maybe that’s what you should do, buy one (or more) and just frame it and never spend it. for a limited time they come in vintage griggs and browne pest control “pest of the month” envelopes, which also have “free gift enclosed” printed on them, which is funny when it’s a gift you’re giving someone. and you know what, you can even mail order them and i’ll mail them out to you to hand deliver or direct to the intended recipient.

well, shit.

international hat day THIS FRIDAY with GREG GREG

Uncategorized — jacob @ 3:02 pm

hatday.gif

yes, it’s that time of the year again, in between thanksgiving and new years, when we celebrate that most holy of days- international hat day. this is an international holiday that over 80% of the population celebrate, in which we wear hats and try on new hats, and maybe we buy a new hat, or we lose an old hat on the bus, or it blows off in the street and we don’t run after it, we just stand there and wave, and maybe say something like “so long, hat!”. this year there will be a special ceremony at the store, with music by our own very good friend GREG GREG, and microwave food (as is the custom). we have a lot of hats at the shop, including SPECIAL HATS made just for this occasion, so please arrive hatless and plan to leave hatted. also if you have any food you would like microwaved, please bring some to share (no meat, please!). we will also have a takeaway checklist of activities for the celebration of international hat day (which is really just the first day of international hats of the-world-as-it-could-be week, which runs friday to friday). in this way you can really get the most out of all the international hat festivities, and build up from the mellow life-changements of international hat day to the “big picture” slopfest that is new year’s eve.

remember, whether it’s a chapeau, lid, busby, shako, bearskin, boater, leghorn, straw hat, Panama, sailor, skimmer, bonnet, derby, derby hat, plug hat, bowler, cavalier, ten-gallon, deerstalker, dress hat, opera hat, silk hat, top hat, stovepipe, high hat, beaver, topper, dunce cap, fedora, felt hat, homburg, Stetson, trilby, snap-brim, sombrero, sou’wester, toque, tyrolean, hardhat, baseball cap, tiny brim, dreadbag, homburg, mortarboard, porkpie, ushanka, or fez, whatever you call it, if you put it on the top of your head and it isn’t a wig or fake beard (and it isn’t a hair accessory) (and it’s a hat), then it’s a hat, and even if you can’t come visit the store, i hope you still have a good holiday.

lilah + tumblecat

Uncategorized — jacob @ 12:42 pm

zag! i neglected to mention that there’s a real chrysanthemum of a show tonight (thursday the 16th) at HBML- lilah ringler and tumblecat poof poofy poof, performing new works as a duo. or rather, as two dueling singles, battling for (and as such defining (and as such creating)) turf. they chose a topic weeks months ago, both have been working on writings and soundings on this topic, tonight they meet and both go at it. it’s at 7′oclock, and space is limited but we’ll cram. with special guest. don’t sleep like i almost did!

quilt show

Uncategorized, art show, events — jacob @ 10:58 pm

this friday at HBML, there’s an art opening showcasing a new collaborative quilt that i (jacob berendes) made with my mother (anna louise berendes). we went halvsies on some choice psychedelic fabric from esther’s fashions and each made half a quilt with it without comparing notes or letting the other person see. we’re sewing them together this afternoon, but the opening at the store is, like i said, friday. from 6 to 8, with beverages.

esther’s fashions is on pleasant st, just a few blocks from the store (towards downtown). it’s an african clothing store that sells small bolts of really awesome, sometimes garish, sometimes beautiful, fabric. you have to buy the whole bolt (which is like 6 yards) but it’s totally worth it. they also sell really really pointy men’s shoes, made of a variety of leathers including ostrich and alligator.
